Somasundaram Selvanayagam (born May 28, 1932 – died May 23, 1979) was a smart geographer and teacher from Sri Lanka. He taught at universities and even became the head of the Geography Department at the University of Jaffna.

Early Life and Education

Somasundaram Selvanayagam was born on May 28, 1932. He went to school at Jaffna Hindu College and Zahira College, Colombo.

In 1953, he started studying at the University of Ceylon in Peradeniya. He worked hard and earned a special degree in geography in 1957.

University Career

After finishing his first degree, Selvanayagam worked for a short time in a government department. Then, in 1951, he became an assistant teacher at the University of Ceylon.

He loved learning, so he went to the London School of Economics (LSE) in 1961. There, he studied even more and earned a Master's degree. He went back to the LSE in 1970 to do more research. In 1971, he earned his PhD, which is the highest university degree.

In 1974, Selvanayagam moved to Nigeria to teach. He became a senior lecturer in the Geography Department at Ahmadu Bello University.

He returned to Sri Lanka in 1977. He was chosen to be the head of the Geography Department at the University of Sri Lanka's Jaffna campus. This was a very important job.

Selvanayagam was also a member of the Royal Geographical Society. This is a special group for people who study geography. He passed away on May 23, 1979.
