How SPC Started and Grew
Early Days: From Fruit Growers to Big Company (1917–2005)
SPC began in 1917. A group of fruit growers in Victoria's Goulburn Valley started it together. They called it the Shepparton Fruit Preserving Co. Ltd. In February 1918, the company started canning pears, peaches, and nectarines. They used the brand name SPC.
In 1919, SPC became a public company. This meant people could buy shares in it. Another company called Ardmona opened in 1921. Later, in 2002, the Shepparton Preserving Company (SPC) and Ardmona joined together. They became SPC Ardmona.
Changes and Challenges (2005–2019)
In 2005, a big company called Coca-Cola Amatil bought SPC Ardmona. They paid a lot of money for it. Coca-Cola Amatil also invested more money to improve the factories. The Victorian government helped too, by giving some money.
SPC Ardmona also bought other food brands like IXL and Taylors in 2004.
However, SPC Ardmona faced some tough times while owned by Coca-Cola Amatil. They closed their processing plant in Mooroopna in 2011. Their factory in Kyabram was sold in 2019.
In 2012, SPC Ardmona had to get rid of a lot of fruit they had bought. They couldn't sell it all. They said that fewer people were buying their products in Australia and overseas. In 2013, SPC Ardmona lost money. They asked the Australian and Victorian governments for help to make their factories more modern. The Victorian Government later provided some money.
In 2016, a supermarket chain called Woolworths stopped buying tinned tomatoes from SPC Ardmona. But they continued to buy tinned fruit.
New Owners and a Fresh Start (2019–2024)
In June 2019, Coca-Cola Amatil sold SPC to a new group. This group was called Shepparton Partners Collective, which is now SPC Global Limited. This new ownership aimed to turn the business around. As part of this plan, SPC sold the IXL and Taylors brands. They also sold the Kyabram factory in 2019.
In August 2021, SPC Global made a rule that all staff and visitors needed to be vaccinated against COVID-19. They were one of the first Australian companies to do this.
In 2021, SPC started making and selling healthy drinks. They bought a brand called Helping Humans. They also started making ready-to-eat meals by acquiring Kuisine Co. and The Good Meal Co.
SPC Global started doing much better financially. They made a profit of A$11.8 million in 2020-21. In 2021-22, their profit grew to A$24 million.
Hussein Rifai is currently the Chairman of the company.
SPC Global Today: Mergers and New Growth (2024–Current)
In 2024, SPC joined with two other companies: the Original Juice Company and Nature One Dairy. They now trade under the new name SPC Global. Robert Iervasi is their Managing Director. In December 2024, SPC Global returned to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). This was after being away for 20 years. Their stock ticker is SPG.
SPC Global now owns several well-known brands. These include SPC, Goulburn Valley, Ardmona, Provital, Pomlife, and Helping Humans.
In their first financial report since rejoining the ASX, SPC Global announced their results. They had A$197.9 million in revenue. SPC itself made A$139 million during that time.
