Coca-Cola Amatil Limited (CCAL) was a large Australian company that put drinks into bottles and cans. It operated for over 100 years, from 1904 until 2021. The company's main job was to bottle drinks for The Coca-Cola Company, and it was one of the biggest Coca-Cola bottlers in the world.
In 2021, CCAL merged with Coca-Cola European Partners. This created a new, even larger company called Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. Before this, CCAL sold drinks in six countries: Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Samoa. Besides soft drinks, they also bottled coffee and other beverages.

History of the Company
The company started in 1904 as a tobacco company called British Tobacco (Australia). It wasn't until 1964 that it began to get into the soft drink business. It bought its first Coca-Cola bottling factory in Perth, Australia.
Over time, the company focused more on drinks and snacks. In 1977, it changed its name to Amatil Limited. It started to expand its bottling business to other countries, like Fiji and New Zealand, in the 1980s. In 1989, The Coca-Cola Company bought a large part of Amatil.
In 1992, Amatil sold its snack food business to focus completely on drinks. It continued to grow in Asia. The company had factories all over Australia. In 2017, it announced it would close its factory in Thebarton, Adelaide, and expand its factory in Richlands, Queensland.
The company's journey ended in May 2021. It was bought by Coca-Cola European Partners for almost A$10 billion. This merger created the world's largest Coca-Cola bottler.
What Products Did Amatil Make?
Coca-Cola Amatil made and sold many different kinds of drinks. Their products included fizzy soft drinks, water, sports drinks, and fruit juices. They also made iced tea, coffee, and other beverages.
Some of the famous non-alcoholic drinks they bottled include:
- Coca-Cola
- Sprite
- Fanta
- Mount Franklin Water
- Powerade
- Pump
The company also made hot drinks like coffee from brands such as Grinders Coffee.
Recycling and Container Deposit Schemes
A container deposit scheme is a recycling program where people get a small amount of money back for returning empty drink containers like bottles and cans. This encourages people to recycle.
Between 2011 and 2013, Coca-Cola Amatil was against new container deposit schemes in parts of Australia. The company, along with others, took legal action against a scheme in the Northern Territory. They argued that it created problems for selling the same product in different parts of Australia.
The court agreed with the beverage companies. This decision caused a public backlash, with many people showing their support for the recycling scheme.
Coca-Cola Amatil suggested a different idea called a "National Bin Network." However, groups like Keep Australia Beautiful argued that this would not be as effective as the container deposit schemes. The government in the Northern Territory said it would continue to support its "Cash for Containers" program.
