Company History
How Suntory Oceania Started
Frucor, the original name for the company, was started in 1962. It was founded by the New Zealand Apple and Pear Board. Their very first product was a juice called Fresh Up.
In 1978, a famous New Zealand Olympic runner, John Walker, helped promote Fresh Up. His catchphrase was "Fresh Up – it's got to be good for you'". The New Zealand Apple and Pear Board owned Frucor until 1998.
Changes in Ownership
In 1998, a company called Pacific Equity Partners bought Frucor for $50 million. The next year, in 1999, Frucor became the only company allowed to bottle Pepsi products in New Zealand. In 2000, Frucor launched its V energy drink in the UK and Ireland. These drinks were made in the Netherlands.
In 2002, a French company called Groupe Danone bought Frucor for $294 million. In the same year, Frucor also bought an Australian fruit juice company called Spring Valley.
In October 2008, Groupe Danone sold Frucor to the Japanese company Suntory. This sale was for more than €600 million. In January 2011, Frucor launched the V brand in Spain. By June of that year, it was already being sold in 8,000 stores across Spain.
Recent Developments
In June 2017, Frucor Beverages changed its name to Frucor Suntory. This was done to better connect with its parent company, Suntory.
In 2024, the company announced another big change. Frucor Suntory partnered with Suntory Global Spirits in the Oceania region. Because of this new partnership, the company was renamed Suntory Oceania.
