Rockstar Energy, often seen as ROCKST★R or ЯR, is a popular brand of energy drink. It was first created in 2001. By 2020, Rockstar Energy was one of the biggest energy drink brands in the world. It held about 10% of the global market. This made it the third-largest brand, after Red Bull and Monster Energy. In 2020, the company PepsiCo bought the Rockstar brand. Rockstar's main office is located in Los Angeles, California.

The Story of Rockstar Energy

How Rockstar Energy Started

Rockstar Energy was started in 2001 by a person named Russell Weiner. When it first began, Rockstar wanted to be different from other energy drinks. The main competitor, Red Bull, sold smaller cans. Rockstar decided to sell its drinks in larger cans, which were 16 US fluid ounces (470 ml) in size. Red Bull's cans were 8 US fluid ounces (240 ml). Rockstar used the slogan "twice the size of Red Bull for the same price" to show this difference.

Growing Big in the Market

By 2007, Rockstar Energy had become one of the top three energy drink brands. This was especially true in North America. The company's sales grew very quickly. In 2004, sales increased by 155%, reaching $48 million. By 2007, Rockstar had sold over a billion cans of its drinks.

In 2008, Rockstar held 14% of the energy drink market in the United States. By 2009, you could find Rockstar drinks in more than 20 countries around the world. In the summer of 2009, Rockstar changed its main distributor. It switched from the Coca-Cola Company to PepsiCo.

Becoming Part of PepsiCo

In 2020, PepsiCo bought Rockstar Energy. This big purchase cost $3.85 billion. After this, PepsiCo took over the production and distribution of Rockstar drinks. For example, in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, another company called A.G. Barr used to handle Rockstar. But after PepsiCo bought Rockstar, that agreement ended in 2020.

New Look and Flavors

In 2021, PepsiCo made some changes to Rockstar Energy. They changed the taste of the "Original" version of the drink. The cans also got a new design. These changes were part of a new plan to attract more different kinds of customers.

Then, in 2024, Rockstar redesigned its packaging again. This time, they moved away from the usual look of energy drink cans. The new designs featured smaller logos and fewer pictures. They used more solid colors instead.

What's Inside Rockstar Energy

Key Ingredients

The original Rockstar Energy Drink contains several ingredients. These include sugar and caffeine. It also has different herbs. Some of these herbs are panax ginseng, ginkgo biloba, milk thistle extract, and guarana-seed extract. Another important ingredient is taurine, with 1000 mg in each drink.

The amount of guarana in the drink was once higher. However, after some health concerns about the herb were discussed, the amount of guarana was significantly reduced.

Rockstar Energy and Sports

Sponsoring Events and Athletes

Just like other big energy drink brands such as Red Bull and Monster Energy, Rockstar Energy has supported many sports and music events. This is called sponsorship.

Rockstar used to sponsor several music festivals. These included the Mayhem Festival, which was a metal and rock festival. It toured the United States in July and August. Another was the Uproar Festival, a rock festival that toured in September and October. Both of these music events stopped happening in 2015.

Rockstar also sponsored the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. This was a series of off-road vehicle races. These racing events were discontinued in 2020.

Rockstar Energy has also supported many individual athletes. These athletes compete in various action sports. Some of the sponsored athletes included Husqvarna factory motorcycle riders like Gautier Paulin, Graham Jarvis, and Pablo Quintanilla. They also sponsored motorcycle road racer Jorge Lorenzo from 2011 to 2012. Other athletes included flat track rider Bryan Smith, rallycross drivers Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, off-road truck driver Rob MacCachren, and drifters Fredric Aasbø and Ryan Tuerck.
