Early Life and First Races
Because his father was in the U.S. Navy, Tanner Foust's family moved around a lot. He spent part of his childhood in Scotland, where he first discovered rally racing. He learned how to drive on the country roads near his home.
When he returned to the United States, Foust planned to become a doctor and studied biology at the University of Colorado. But his love for cars was too strong. He spent his summers at the racetrack, working as a mechanic and driver coach just to get a chance to drive racecars.
After college, he decided to follow his passion. He worked as an ice driving coach and competed in any race he could find. In 2003, he became a professional racer and moved to California to also work as a stunt driver for movies.
A Champion in Different Fields
Tanner Foust is known for being great at many different kinds of racing. He has competed against some of the best drivers in the world, like Michael Schumacher and Colin McRae.
Drifting and Rallycross Success
Foust was a top competitor in Formula Drift, a major drifting competition. He became the first driver in the series' history to win the championship two years in a row, in 2007 and 2008.
He is also one of the most successful drivers in X Games history, with nine medals. He won his first gold medal in 2007 for rally racing. In 2010, he won two more gold medals in Rally Car Racing and Super Rally.
In 2011, Foust started focusing more on rallycross. He won the Global RallyCross Championship in both 2011 and 2012. He also became the first American to compete in the European Rallycross Championship.
Setting World Records
Foust is also famous for performing amazing stunts and setting world records. In 2011, he worked with Hot Wheels to set a world record for the longest jump in a car. He flew 332 feet through the air at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
A year later, he set another world record by driving a car through a 60-foot-tall double loop-the-loop, also for Hot Wheels.
