Sanremese Calcio is an Italian football club from Sanremo, Liguria. People often just call them Sanremese.

The club's original team, U.S. Sanremese, stopped playing in 1987. The team you see today was started again in 2015.

Currently, Sanremese plays in Serie D, which is one of Italy's top football leagues for amateur teams.

Club History

Early Years: 1904 to 1987

The club first started in 1904 as U.S. Sanremese. However, the actual football team didn't begin until 1911. The US Sanremese was formed when two local teams, Ausonia and Speranza, joined together.

The team played three seasons in Serie B from 1937 to 1940. Their best ever result was finishing 9th in Serie B during the 1937–38 season.

Sanremese is also special because it's the only Italian team to have played in every Serie C championship when it was a single national league, from 1952 to 1958.

From 1977 to 1979, the team moved up from Serie D to Serie C1. They played seven seasons in Serie C1, even achieving an impressive 4th place in 1979–80.

Playing in the Anglo-Italian Cup

In the 1980–81 season, Sanremese took part in the Anglo-Italian Cup, which was also known as the Talbot Challenge Cup that year. They won two matches, drew one, and lost one. They finished third in their group.

Financial Challenges and Restart

In the summer of 1987, the original club had to close down after 83 years because of big financial problems.

The club was started again in 1987 as Sanremese Football Club 1904. In 1992, it merged with another team, Sanremo 80, and got back its historic name, U.S. Sanremese Calcio 1904.

Success in Regional Leagues

The club won the regional Eccellenza Liguria league twice, in 1991–92 and 1995–96. These wins helped them get promoted to Serie D. They also won the Regional Coppa Italia Liguria in 1995–96.

In the 1997–98 season, Sanremese won Serie D. They played two seasons in Serie C2 from 1998 to 2000 before returning to Serie D.

They played four seasons in Serie D from 2000 to 2004, which led to them being accepted into Serie C2.

From 2004 to 2007, the team played three seasons in Serie C2. In 2005–06, they reached the final of the Coppa Italia Lega Pro, but lost to Gallipoli.

By 2007, the team faced more financial difficulties, and many players left. This led to them being moved down from Serie D. In July 2008, the club was officially declared inactive due to its debts.

New Beginnings: 2009 to Today

In August 2009, a team called Ospedaletti-Sanremo changed its name to U.S.D. Sanremese Calcio 1904. This made them the new official team carrying on the Sanremese name.

In the 2009–10 season, Sanremese won the regional Eccellenza Liguria again, which meant they were promoted to Serie D. They also won the Regional Coppa Italia Liguria that year.

In August 2010, the team was allowed to join Lega Pro Seconda Divisione for the 2010–11 season. They managed to avoid being moved down after winning a playoff match. However, due to more financial problems, the club was unable to join the league for the next season and had to close down in June 2011.

After a year without a team, the club was started again in the summer of 2012 as A.S.D. Sanremese. They began playing in Terza Categoria, the lowest league. They quickly moved up to Seconda Categoria in 2013 and then to Prima Categoria after winning a playoff.

In 2015, the club allowed another local team, ASD Carlin's Boys, to change its name to Unione Sanremo and start playing in Eccellenza. This new team won the Coppa Italia Dilettanti in 2016, which automatically promoted them to Serie D in their very first year. In 2019, the club was renamed Sanremese Calcio.

Team Colors and Badge

The main colors of the Sanremese team are light blue and white. Their second uniform is red.
