Assata Perkins (born December 28, 1981), known professionally as Sa-Roc (/sɒ rɒk/), is an American rapper. She is known for her powerful lyrics and unique style. In 2016, she made history by becoming only the second female rapper to sign with the famous Rhymesayers record label.

Early Life and Education
Sa-Roc was born in Southeast, Washington, D.C., on December 28, 1981. She grew up in the Congress Heights neighborhood. As a teenager, she joined City of Peace. This group helped students get involved in their community through theater. Sa-Roc has shared that she faced personal challenges during her teenage years. These experiences later inspired some of her songs, like "Forever." She attended Nation House school. Later, she studied biology at Howard University.
Music Career Highlights
Sa-Roc began her music journey in 2002. She met Atlanta-based producer Sol Messiah. They started a long and successful partnership. Even though she recorded albums, Sa-Roc did not perform on stage until 2011. Her first performance was at a benefit concert for Mutulu Shakur.
In 2013, she released her album The Book of Light. This album included the song "Just Us," written to honor Troy Davis. The next year, in 2014, she worked with David Banner. They created the single "The Who?" for her album Nebuchadnezzar. She also performed with Black Thought at the 2014 A3C Hip Hop Festival. In 2015, she released her mixtape The Legend of Black Moses.
Signing with Rhymesayers
A big moment in Sa-Roc's career happened in May 2016. She signed with Rhymesayers Entertainment. This made her only the second female rapper to join the label. Her first official appearance with Rhymesayers was a collaboration. She worked with Brother Ali on his album All the Beauty in This Whole Life. Sa-Roc also toured with Brother Ali to support the new album.
Recent Works and Recognition
In February 2018, Sa-Roc released her single "Forever." In October 2018, she debuted another single, "Goddess Gang." This track was featured in the 2019 racing video game Need for Speed Heat. Her first album with Rhymesayers, The Sharecropper's Daughter, came out on October 2, 2020. The Economist magazine named it one of the 15 best albums of 2020. Sa-Roc's song "Believe" was also featured in And She Could Be Next. This was a 2020 PBS documentary about the Squad.
Musical Influences
Sa-Roc gets inspiration from many different artists. These include Billie Holiday, Outkast, Bad Brains, Nirvana, and Björk. Her stage name, Sa-Roc, has a special meaning. It combines her childhood nickname "Sa Sa" with a tribute to the hip hop emcee Sha-Rock.
