History of Sabana Grande de Boyá
Early Beginnings and Taino People
Sabana Grande de Boyá has a long history. It was founded by a brave Taino chief named Enriquillo. He was a hero from Bahoruco. Enriquillo fought for 14 years. He made the authorities in Santo Domingo sign a peace treaty. After this, he moved to Boyá in 1533. He later passed away there. A temple was built where he was buried.
The Taino people were the first inhabitants of the island. The last Tainos on the island lived in Boyá. Because of this, the town is known as the "last place of the native people" of Santo Domingo. By the late 1500s, only 13 Spanish families lived there. The town was mostly forgotten for a while.
Growth and Sugar Cane Farming
The town grew a lot in the 1940s. This was when people started planting and harvesting sugar cane. A former president of the Dominican Republic, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, led this work.
