Sabanilla is a district located in the Montes de Oca canton. It is part of the San José province in Costa Rica.

What's in a Name?

The name Sabanilla comes from the Spanish word sabana. This word means savanna, which is a large grassy plain. The ending -illa makes it a "little" savanna. So, Sabanilla means "little savanna," describing a small area with open spaces and not many tall trees.

A Look at Sabanilla's Past

Around the late 1800s, an important church called the Iglesia San Ramón Nonato was finished in Sabanilla. This project was encouraged by Monsignor Bernardo Augusto Thiel. He was a significant religious leader in Costa Rica from 1880 to 1991.

On August 2, 1915, the Montes de Oca canton was officially created by a special law. This happened during the time when Alfredo González Flores was the president of Costa Rica.

Later, on April 24, 1977, a research center called the Departamento Ecuménico de Investigaciones (DEI) was started in Sabanilla by Franz Hinkelammert. Many people who study how faith can help communities in Latin America visit this center every year.
