Franz Josef Hinkelammert (born January 12, 1931 – died July 16, 2023) was an important thinker. He was born in Germany but later became a citizen of Costa Rica. He studied both theology (the study of religion) and economics (the study of how money and resources are used).

Hinkelammert was a key figure in something called liberation theology. This is a way of thinking about faith that focuses on helping poor and oppressed people. He often wrote about how capitalism, an economic system where businesses are mostly owned by private people, could sometimes cause problems. He also helped start a research center in Costa Rica called the Departamento Ecuménico de Investigaciones.

Early Life and Education

Franz Hinkelammert was born in Germany on January 12, 1931. He was a very good student. He earned a special degree called a doctorate in economics. He got this degree from the Free University of Berlin. This showed his deep understanding of how economies work.

Career and Important Ideas

From 1963 to 1973, Hinkelammert taught at the Catholic University of Chile. He shared his ideas with many students there.

After a big change in government in Chile, he moved to Sabanilla, Costa Rica. There, he joined the Departamento Ecuménico de Investigaciones. This was a place where people studied important ideas about society and faith.

Hinkelammert wrote many books and articles. He often looked closely at the neoliberal economic model. This model believes in less government control over businesses. He also explored how different ideas, like Marxism (a political and economic theory) and Christianity, could connect.

He was known for questioning the ideas of famous economists like Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek. He also challenged the philosopher Karl Popper. Hinkelammert believed that some economic ideas could harm people if not thought about carefully.

Later Life and Legacy
