Sabba da Castiglione was born into a noble family in Milan, Italy. He went to the University of Pavia to study law, philosophy, and theology.

In 1505, when he was 25 years old, he joined the Knights Hospitaller. This was a special group of knights who were also like monks. They helped sick and poor people. Sabba worked for them on the island of Rhodes until 1508.

After that, he moved to Rome. There, he developed a strong interest in art and books.

Moving to Faenza

Sabba decided to leave Rome because he felt it was too worldly. Between 1515 and 1519, he moved to Faenza. In Faenza, he became the leader of the church of Santa Maria Maddalena. This church is still known as the "Chiesa della Commenda" because of him.

He spent his time studying, helping others, and supporting artists. He collected many books, sculptures, and other artworks. He also started a free public school for children who were poor. He opened a place for travelers and pilgrims to stay.

In 1525, Sabba promised to pay for the repair of the church buildings. He wanted them to be a base for the Knights. In 1533, he asked an artist named Girolamo da Treviso to paint a fresco in the church. This painting showed the Virgin Mary with Saints Mary Magdalene and Catherine.

Later, in 1554, he asked another artist, Francesco Menzocchi, to paint a fresco. This painting showed Saint Joseph introducing an older Sabba da Castiglione to the Virgin Mary. Sabba also had his tomb placed under this painting. He even wrote the Latin words for his tomb himself.

Sabba's Writings

Sabba da Castiglione wrote several books. Here are some of them:

  • Il lamento pietoso del disgraziato Glonico pastore d'amore e di Delia crudele da lui sommamente amata, published in Venice in 1528.
  • Consolatoria, published in Bologna in 1529.
  • Ricordi, published in Venice in 1554. This book was very popular and had 25 different editions printed before 1613. Ricordi means "Memories" or "Reminders," and it was a collection of his thoughts and advice.
