Sabin is a small, unincorporated community in Wisconsin, United States. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a city or town with its own government. Sabin is located in Richland County, within the Town of Sylvan. You can find it where County Highway E and Robbson Drive meet.

Discovering Sabin's Past

Early Days and First Settlers

Sabin began as a settlement in the 1850s. It was named after Dr. Eli Sabin, who was one of the very first people to live there. The community is located near the beginning of Mill Creek. This creek was once called Eagle Creek or Eagle River.

Long ago, getting to Sabin was tricky. There was only a rough road. It followed the creek for about 32 kilometers (20 miles) south. This road led to the Wisconsin River at a place called Orion.

Churches in Sabin

Sabin was once home to two churches. The first was the Disciples or Christian Church of Sabin. It started in 1858 and built its first wooden building around 1872. This building was later replaced in 1904 with a new one that could seat about 400 people.

People were baptized in Mill Creek during the summer. In winter, they used the local cheese factory for baptisms! The Christian Church held its last service on December 11, 1966. The building was later burned down on April 25, 1979.

The other church was the Mt. Tabor Methodist Church. Land for this church was given in 1868. The local Independent Order of Odd Fellows group helped build this church. They also used it for their meetings. This church is no longer standing, but it was still holding services in 1900. The Mt. Tabor Methodist Church was next to the Mt. Tabor Cemetery. People started being buried there in the 1860s, and it's still used today.

Sabin's Schools

The very first school in Sabin was a log cabin built in 1856. It unfortunately burned down in 1880. The next year, a new wooden school was built. This one also burned down in 1917.

Another wooden school replaced it, but it too burned down in 1929. Finally, a brick schoolhouse was built. This brick building is still standing today! However, it stopped being used as a school in 1962. The Sabin Livewires 4-H club, a group for young people, has been active in the community since 1946.

Local Businesses and Community Life

Sabin had a cheese factory that started around 1901. Through different owners and buildings, cheese was made in Sabin until 1960. The second cheese factory, built around 1915, was a two-story building. The first floor was for making cheese. The second floor had a large hall and kitchen. These were used for community gatherings and events.

Sabin also had its own post office from 1886 to 1911. There was a general store in Sabin from before 1896 until 1966. It changed owners and locations several times. In the 1920s, a company called Jones Lumber Company operated a saw mill in Sabin. This mill produced a lot of lumber, about 1,500,000 board feet, in just six years.
