Sabor River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Sabor River, known as Rio Sabor in Portuguese, is a river that starts its journey in Spain. It then flows into Portugal, entering through the beautiful Natural Park of Montesinho in the northeastern part of the country.

The Sabor River is a "tributary" of the Douro River. This means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Sabor joins the Douro from its right side. As it flows, the Sabor River passes close to the city of Bragança. Here, it receives water from another river called the River Fervença.

The Sabor River eventually empties into the Douro River near a place called Torre de Moncorvo. This is downstream from the Pocinho Dam, close to the village of Foz do Sabor.

About the Sabor River Basin

The area of land that collects all the water for the Sabor River is called its "drainage basin." The Sabor River basin is quite large, covering about 3,170 square kilometers (which is about 1,224 square miles).

This big basin is located in the northeast of Portugal. Most of the land in this area is used for "agroforestry." This means it's a mix of farming and growing trees. People use the land to grow crops and raise animals, but also to manage forests.

Where the Sabor River Flows

The Sabor River's journey begins in Spain. It then crosses the border into Portugal. Its path takes it through the Natural Park of Montesinho. This park is known for its amazing nature and wildlife.

The river continues its flow, getting closer to the city of Bragança. It then meets the Fervença River, which adds more water to the Sabor. Finally, the Sabor River reaches its end point, joining the mighty Douro River.
