The Saddlehorn Caretaker's House and Garage is a special building in the Colorado National Monument. It is also known as the Stone House, the Rock House, or the Superintendent's Quarters. This house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important place in American history.

Building the Saddlehorn House

Who Designed and Built It?

The Saddlehorn Caretaker's House was designed in 1934. The architect was W.G. Carney from the National Park Service. This is the group that manages national parks.

The house was built between 1935 and 1936. It was constructed by young men from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program during the Great Depression. It helped put people to work on important projects. The money for the house came from a special law called the Emergency Conservation Work Act.

The house is located where Rim Rock Drive meets Saddlehorn Loop. This area is named after a cool rock formation nearby. Many CCC workers built the house. They were trained by local experts in stonework and carpentry.

Where Did the Materials Come From?

The builders used materials found right around the site. They also got materials from the Rim Rock Drive construction project. This road was also being built in the Colorado National Monument at the same time.

What Was the House Used For?

A Home for Workers

The Saddlehorn House was built to be a home. It gave shelter to the workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps. These workers were based at Camp NM-2-C. This camp was first set up in March 1933. It later moved to a more permanent spot at Saddlehorn. Before this house, there was no lasting building for the CCC workers to use.

Plans for a Bigger Camp

In 1935, there were plans to build a much larger camp. Besides the Caretaker's House, they wanted to add more buildings. These included a baseball field for the CCC camp. There were also plans for an administration building and a recreation hall. They also planned a mess hall, a bathroom building, and five barracks for housing workers.

The plans for this bigger camp were finished by mid-1935. Some records show that one of the buildings was used for fire training. The last of these camp buildings were removed in the early 1960s. Newer facilities were built in other places.

When Did the House Stop Being Used?

The Caretaker's House and Garage stopped being used in 1942. This was because most workers joined the military during World War II. As of June 2020, the house is listed as 'vacant' or 'not in use'.

How the House Looks

Outside the House

The outside of the house has a sloped roof covered with cedar shingles. The main part of the house has wood siding. It also has exposed log ends. There are vents under each roof end. The house has one stone chimney. The two smaller parts of the building also have sloped roofs. All the wood trim is painted a rust color. A separate stone garage is located nearby.

Inside the House

The inside of the house has a living room and two bedrooms. It also has a kitchen and a bathroom. The kitchen, bathroom, and basement were updated in 1973.

Building Materials

The house was built using local red sandstone. Much of this stone came from very close to the building site. Logs and concrete were also used for the foundation.
