About Saga 105.2 FM
Saga 105.2 FM was a special radio station. It was made just for people over 50 years old. The station played music and had shows that these listeners would enjoy.
Popular Presenters
The station had many well-known presenters. These included Dave Marshall, who used to be a DJ at Radio Clyde. Other popular voices were Bryce Curdy, Angus Simpson, and Art Sutter. They helped make the station a favorite for many listeners.
How Many People Listened
Saga 105.2 FM was quite popular. At its best, in September 2006, about 229,000 people listened to it. In September 2005, the station had a 7.30% share of the radio market. This means that 7.30% of all radio listeners in the area were tuned into Saga 105.2 FM. The managing director, Norman Quirk, was happy with these numbers. They were even better than he expected for the station's first year.
Becoming Smooth Radio
In December 2006, a company called GMG Radio bought the Saga Radio Group. After this, GMG Radio decided to change Saga 105.2 FM. They announced that the station would become "Smooth Radio" in March 2007.
The Smooth Radio Brand
"Smooth Radio" was a brand name that GMG Radio already used. They had other "Smooth Radio" stations in London and the North-West of England. These stations played soul music. The plan was for Saga's other stations in the Midlands to also become Smooth Radio.
The Last Broadcast
On March 23, 2007, Saga 105.2 FM had its last broadcast. Angus Simpson was the last voice heard on the station. He thanked all the listeners for tuning in over the years. The very last song played was "Bringing Back the Good Times" by Love Affair. This was the same song that started the station two years before.
Right after this, at 6 PM, a "Smooth Preview Weekend" began. This gave listeners a taste of the new music that would be played. The official launch of Smooth Radio happened at 6 AM on Monday, March 26, 2007. The new breakfast show presenter was John McCauley, another former DJ from Radio Clyde.
