Saga 105.2 FM was a radio station that broadcast in Glasgow, Scotland. It was part of the Saga Radio Group and started broadcasting in September 2004. This station was special because it was designed for listeners who were over 50 years old.

Saga 105.2 FM was an Independent Local Radio station. This means it was a radio station that was not owned by the government. It was run by a private company.

How Saga 105.2 FM Reached Listeners

Broadcasting Across Scotland

From December 2005, Saga 105.2 FM also started broadcasting in the East of Scotland. This included cities like Edinburgh, and areas like Fife and the Lothians. It used a newer technology called DAB, which stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. DAB allows for clearer sound and more stations.

Licensing and Regulation

Saga 105.2 FM was the very last radio station to get its license from the Radio Authority. The Radio Authority was the group in charge of giving out licenses for radio stations. After Saga 105.2 FM got its license, the Radio Authority became part of a new organization called Ofcom. Ofcom now oversees all kinds of communication in the UK, including radio.

Who Was On Air?

The station had many popular presenters. These included Dave Marshall, who used to be a DJ on Radio Clyde. Other well-known voices were Bryce Curdy, Angus Simpson, and Art Sutter. They played music and talked about topics that interested their older audience.

How Many People Listened?

Listener Numbers and Popularity

Saga 105.2 FM was quite popular. At its best, in September 2006, about 229,000 people listened to the station. This number is called its "reach." It means how many different people tuned in.

Market Share

The station also had a "market share" of 7.30% in September 2005. Market share tells us what percentage of all radio listeners in an area were listening to Saga 105.2 FM. The station's first year of listening numbers were even better than what the managing director, Norman Quirk, had expected.

The End of Saga 105.2 FM

Becoming Smooth Radio

In December 2006, a company called GMG Radio bought the Saga Radio Group. After this, GMG Radio decided to change Saga 105.2 FM. They announced that the station would be renamed "Smooth Radio" starting in March 2007. Smooth Radio was a brand name that GMG Radio used for its soul music stations in other parts of the UK, like London and the North-West of England. Saga's other stations in the Midlands also changed to Smooth Radio.

The Final Broadcast

The very last broadcast of Saga 105.2 FM happened on March 23, 2007. The last voice listeners heard was Angus Simpson. He thanked everyone for listening. The final song played was "Bringing on Back the Good Times" by Love Affair. This was the same song that had started the station two years earlier.

Right after this, at 6 PM, a "Smooth Preview Weekend" began. This gave listeners a chance to hear the new kind of music that would be played on the station. The official launch of Smooth Radio happened a few days later, on Monday, March 26, 2007, at 6 AM. The new breakfast show presenter was John McCauley, who also used to be a DJ on Radio Clyde.
