Sagawa Shiga Football Club (佐川急便滋賀フットボールクラブ, Sagawa Shiga Futtobōru Kurabu) was a Japanese football team. They were based in Moriyama, Shiga. The team played in the Japan Football League (JFL), which is a top amateur league in Japan. Sagawa Shiga FC was known for being a very strong team during its time.
How the Club Started
Sagawa Shiga Football Club was formed in 2007. It was created when two other football clubs joined together. These clubs were Sagawa Express Tokyo S.C. and Sagawa Express Osaka S.C.. Both of these teams were also part of the Japan Football League.
The Tokyo team had been in the JFL since 2001. The Osaka team had been playing in the JFL since 2002. The decision to merge these two teams was announced on September 14, 2006. The new club's home base was moved to Shiga Prefecture. This is where the main office of the Sagawa Express company is located.
Early Success
Joining two strong teams together worked very well. In their first year in the JFL, Sagawa Shiga FC won the championship! Eight of their players were even chosen for the "JFL Best Eleven" team in 2007. This showed how talented their players were.
In 2008, another team from Shiga, F.C. Mi-O Biwako Kusatsu, also joined the JFL. This meant there would be exciting "Shiga derby" matches. A derby match is when two teams from the same area play against each other. F.C. Mi-O had also started from a Sagawa Express team, the Kyoto S.C., in 2005. Their first derby game was played on March 16, 2008. It was also the first match of the 2008 season.
Name Change and Withdrawal
In 2008, the team's name changed to Sagawa Shiga FC. This was done to get more support from the local community in Shiga.
However, on October 16, 2012, Sagawa Shiga FC announced something big. They told the JFL organization that they planned to leave the league. They officially withdrew at the end of the 2012 season. Even though the main team no longer plays, the club still runs a football academy. This academy helps young players learn and improve their football skills.
