The Sage-Kirby House is a really old and special house in Cromwell, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, between 1811 and 1815. This house is important because it's one of only a few brick houses from that time in Cromwell, and it's the only one with a big chimney right in the middle. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

What Makes the Sage-Kirby House Special?

The Sage-Kirby House is located in a quiet area of central Cromwell. It's a two-and-a-half-story brick building. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides. A large chimney stands right in the center of the house.

Inside the Sage-Kirby House

The front door is in the middle of the house. Above the door, there is a special semi-oval window. This window is called a fanlight. Inside, the house has a strong timber frame. Many of the original parts and designs are still there.

A Look at Its History

The Sage-Kirby House was built around 1811 to 1815. It is one of only four brick houses left in Cromwell that were built in the Federal style. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution. What makes this house extra special is its central chimney. This was an older style of building that was not common anymore when this house was built.

The house was built for Ebenezer Sage. His family was one of the first to settle in Cromwell. Later, in the 1800s, Samuel Kirby owned the house for 15 years. He was also from an old Cromwell family. In 1944, the house was changed into two separate homes. But in 1953, a big project started to make it one home again.
