The Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier (which is Cathédrale Saint-François-Xavier in French) is a very important church. It is the main church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chicoutimi in Quebec, Canada. You can find it at 514, rue Racine Est in the Saguenay area of Chicoutimi. It looks out over the old port of the town.
This building is actually the fourth church built on this spot. It is the third one to serve as the main cathedral for the diocese. It's a big church, with enough seats for 1,500 people!
History of the Cathedral
Early Churches and Fires
The first cathedral on this site opened in 1878. Sadly, it was destroyed by a big fire on June 24, 1912.
A new church was built to replace it and opened in 1915. But this one also caught fire and was destroyed on January 16, 1919.
The Current Building
The church you see today opened in 1922. It was designed by three architects: Rene-P. Lemay, Armand Gravel, and Alfred Lamontagne.
They designed it in a style called Renaissance revival. This means it looks like buildings from the Renaissance period, which was a time of great art and learning in Europe.
