The Saint Joseph of the Lake Church is a special place located on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Menominee County, Wisconsin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. This means it is an important historical site in the United States.
A Look at the Church's History
Christian missionaries came to this area around 1875. They served both the Menominee people and other settlers. A cemetery for Christians and a separate burial ground were set up soon after.
Building the Church
The church was built in the 1890s. A person named Father Blase Krake led the building project. The church became a safe place for the Menominee people. It helped them keep their way of life alive.
Protecting Menominee Traditions
At one time, the federal government of the United States made rules that stopped many Native American tribes from speaking their languages. They also could not perform their traditional ceremonies. However, the Saint Joseph of the Lake Church allowed the Menominee to do these things on its land. This was very important. The church is known for helping the Menominee way of life and traditions continue. It allowed these important parts of their culture to be passed down to new generations.
