The islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis have a rich past. For many years, European countries wanted to control them.
Early Battles for Control
In the late 1600s, two powerful countries, France and England, fought over Saint Kitts. They both wanted to own this important island. After many battles, England finally gained control. This happened on April 11, 1713, when they signed a peace agreement called the Treaty of Utrecht.
Becoming an Independent Nation
Later, in 1967, Saint Kitts and Nevis joined with another island, Anguilla. They formed a group called Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla. This group became an "associated state." This meant they could make their own decisions about things inside their country, but the United Kingdom still handled their defense and foreign affairs.
However, the people of Anguilla wanted to be separate. They rebelled and left the group in 1971. Finally, Saint Kitts and Nevis became a fully independent country in 1983. This meant they could make all their own decisions, just like any other independent nation.
Connecting Countries: High Commissions
Even though Saint Kitts and Nevis is independent, it still has a close relationship with the United Kingdom. Countries often have special offices in other nations to help their citizens and manage their relationship. These offices are called "High Commissions" between countries that are part of the Commonwealth of Nations.
