Saint Lawrence, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Saint Lawrence (also known as Saint Lawrenceburgh) was once a small community in El Dorado County, California. It was located about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of a town called Kelsey.

Saint Lawrence is no longer an active town or settlement today. It is considered a "former settlement," which means people used to live and work there, but the community eventually faded away.

What Was Saint Lawrence?

Saint Lawrence was a small place that existed mainly because of mining. Many settlements in California during the 1800s grew up around gold mines. This area was known for the Saint Lawrence Mine, which is how the settlement got its name.

Post Offices in Saint Lawrence

Having a post office was a big deal for a small community back then. It meant people could send and receive letters and packages. Saint Lawrenceburgh had a post office for a few years, from 1872 to 1875. Later, a post office opened in Saint Lawrence itself, operating from 1880 to 1882. The closing of these post offices often shows that the community was shrinking or people were moving away.
