The Original Mission's Story
The story of the Saint Thomas Indian Mission actually begins with an older mission called the Purísima Concepción Mission. Building this first mission started in the fall of 1780. It was built by two priests, Father Juan Antonio Barreneche and Father Francis Tomás Hermenogildo Garcés.
Why the First Mission Was Destroyed
The Purísima Concepción Mission was not well protected. In July 1781, just one year after it started, the mission was attacked. This attack was carried out by the Quechan people, also known as the Yuma. They were very unhappy with how the Spanish colonists were treating them.
During this attack, which lasted from July 17 to 19, 1781, the mission was destroyed. Both Father Garcés and Father Barreneche lost their lives. More than 100 Spanish settlers were also killed. About 74 other settlers were taken as prisoners. They were held until Governor Pedro Fages paid money to have them released in 1782.
Remembering the Site
Today, the place where the mission stood is a very important historical spot. It is recognized as California Registered Historic Landmark #350. There is a special plaque and a statue of Father Garcés there. These help people remember the original mission and its sad history.
The Purísima Concepción Mission was one of two missions in that area. The other was the Mission San Pedro y San Pablo de Bicuner, which was about eight miles away along the river. Later, the land where the mission once stood became part of Fort Yuma.
