Mansa Sakura (also spelled Sakoura) was an important leader of the Mali Empire in West Africa. He was the sixth mansa, which means emperor or ruler. Sakura had a very interesting journey to power. He was born as a slave, but he later gained his freedom. After becoming free, he joined the army of Sundiata Keita, who was the founder of the Mali Empire, and became a general.
When Sundiata Keita died, his sons argued about who should rule next. Around the year 1285, Sakura stepped in and took control of the throne. He brought the empire back together and became a strong leader.

Mansa Sakura's Rule and Achievements
Mansa Sakura was known as a powerful and smart ruler. He liked to explore other lands and learn new ideas to help his own kingdom. He also really encouraged trade, which helped the Mali Empire become rich.
Expanding the Mali Empire
Under Mansa Sakura's leadership, the Mali Empire grew much larger. His armies won several new areas, and the empire expanded all the way along the Gambia River to the sea. This made the Mali Empire a very strong and important power in West Africa.
Sakura's Pilgrimage and Death
Before he died, Mansa Sakura went on a special journey called the Hajj. This is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, which is important for Muslims.
The End of His Reign
On his way home from the Hajj, around the year 1300, Sakura was attacked near a place called Djibouti. Warriors wanted his gold and killed him during the attack.
After Mansa Sakura died, the throne went back to the royal family of the Keita dynasty. The next emperor was Gao, who was Sundiata's nephew.
