Salem is a small, quiet community in Cherokee County, Texas. It's not a big city with its own government, but rather a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger area. In 2000, about 20 people lived there. Salem is also close to the bigger cities of Tyler and Jacksonville.
Salem's Past: A Look Back
Salem likely started to be settled after the American Civil War, which ended in 1865. A local church was very important to the community. It served as a gathering place for everyone.
By the mid-1930s, Salem had the church, a cemetery, and several scattered houses. After World War II, many people moved away from Salem. However, the cemetery and a few houses were still there in the 1990s. Joseph T. Cook, a person from the community, is buried in Salem's cemetery. In 2000, the community had 20 residents.
Where is Salem Located?
Salem is found in the south-central part of Cherokee County, Texas. It is located on Farm to Market Road 241. Salem is about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of the town of Rusk.
Learning in Salem
Salem had its own school way back in 1897. At that time, 31 students were enrolled there. The school was still open and teaching students in the mid-1930s. Today, children in the Salem area attend schools that are part of the Rusk Independent School District.
