Salem District is a cool place in Tamil Nadu, a state in South India. Its main city, and where the district's offices are, is called Salem. Other important towns nearby are Mettur, Omalur, and Attur. Salem is known for its beautiful hills and small mountains all around. Long ago, the Mazhavar kings ruled this ancient land.
People and Population
According to a count done in 2011, Salem district had about 3.48 million people living there. For every 1,000 boys and men, there were 954 girls and women. This number was higher than the average for all of India. About 16.67% of the people belonged to Scheduled Castes, and 3.43% were from Scheduled Tribes. The district's average literacy rate, which means how many people can read and write, was about 65.64%.

Local Industries
The handloom industry in Salem is very old and important. It is a traditional way of making cloth at home. People here create beautiful sarees and dhotis using silk and cotton threads. More than 75,000 handlooms are busy making these clothes. The total value of the cloth made each year is estimated to be very high. Salem is also a big textile center in Tamil Nadu. It has over 125 spinning mills, which make yarn. There are also modern weaving units and places that make finished clothes.
