Salinas is a lively city and a popular resort area. It is located on the "Costa de Oro" (Golden Coast) in southern Uruguay. This city is part of the Canelones Department.
The name Salinas also refers to the larger municipality. This municipality includes the city of Salinas itself. It also covers other nearby resort towns. These towns are Marindia, Pinamar–Pinepark, and Neptunia. The municipality also includes the countryside areas to the north of these towns.

Where is Salinas Located?
The city of Salinas is found right on Kilometre 39 of the Ruta Interbalnearia. This is a major highway in Uruguay. It is also where this highway meets Route 87.
Salinas borders other resort towns. To its west, it touches Pinamar-Pinepark. To the east, it borders Marindia. This location makes Salinas easy to reach. It is a great spot for visitors looking for a beach getaway.
A Brief History of Salinas
Salinas used to be known just as a "Balneario." This word means a resort town. But on July 1, 1982, something important happened. Its status was officially changed to "Ciudad," which means city. This change was made by a special law called Ley Nº 15.283. This showed that Salinas had grown a lot and become a more important place.
How Many People Live in Salinas?
Knowing how many people live in a place helps us understand its size. According to a census taken in 2011, Salinas had a population of 8,626 people.
The local government, called the Intendencia de Canelones, also estimated the population for the whole municipality. In 2010, they thought about 16,874 people lived in the municipality during election time. This number is higher because the municipality includes more areas than just the city itself.
