Growing Up on Daufuskie Island
Sallie Ann Robinson was born on Daufuskie Island. This was before many people who lived there started selling their family land in the 1960s. Many islanders then moved to other places like South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Sallie Ann is a writer herself. But her first time in a book was as a character named Ethel. This was in Pat Conroy's famous book, The Water Is Wide. She was one of the students Pat Conroy taught on Daufuskie Island. They stayed friends even when she grew up. Before Pat Conroy passed away in 2016, they sometimes went to book events together.
Today, Sallie Ann Robinson leads tours on Daufuskie Island. She shares the Gullah way of looking at the island with visitors.
