Growing Up on Daufuskie Island
Sallie Ann Robinson was born on Daufuskie Island. This was before many people who lived there started selling their family land. In the 1960s, many islanders moved to other parts of South Carolina, Georgia, or Florida.
A Character in a Famous Book
Even before she wrote her own books, Sallie Ann was in a famous story. She was a character named Ethel in Pat Conroy's book, The Water Is Wide. Pat Conroy was a teacher on Daufuskie Island, and Sallie Ann was one of his students. They stayed friends even when she grew up. Sometimes, they would even appear at book events together before Conroy passed away in 2016.
Sharing Island History
Members of Sallie Ann's family are also shown in a book called Daufuskie Island, A Photographic Essay. This book was made by Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe. Today, Sallie Ann runs a tour company on Daufuskie Island. She shares the Gullah way of life and history with visitors.
