Aw Sian, also known as Sally Aw, was born in 1932. She is a successful businesswoman from Hong Kong. Sally Aw is the daughter of Aw Boon-haw, who was a well-known entrepreneur and newspaper owner from Burma. People sometimes called Sally Aw the Tiger Balm Lady or Chinese Howard Hughes.
Early Life and Family
Sally Aw was born in Rangoon in 1932. When she was 5 years old, she was adopted by her relative, Aw Boon-haw.
Aw Boon-haw had a son named Aw Hoe. Sadly, Aw Hoe passed away in a plane crash in 1951. After her father, Aw Boon-haw, passed away in 1954, Sally Aw took over his newspaper businesses in Hong Kong. She was 22 years old at the time.
A Leader in Media
Sally Aw became very famous as a leader in the media world. She owned several newspapers. These included The Standard, which was an English newspaper for business news. She also owned the Chinese news group Sing Tao Holdings. This group included Sing Tao Daily and Sing Tao Wan Pao, which her father started in 1938.
Sally Aw also started her own newspaper called Express News in 1963. Later, she owned Tin Tin Daily News through one of her companies.
During a difficult time for businesses, Sally Aw had to sell her media companies. This happened around 1998.
In 1997, Sally Aw was chosen to be a delegate for the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. This is a group that advises the government in China, and she represented Hong Kong.
Awards and Recognition
In 1988, Sally Aw received an important award called the Carr Van Anda Award. This award comes from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. It is given every year to people who have made great contributions to journalism. Sally Aw received the award because she helped Sing Tao become a major Chinese-language newspaper around the world.
