The Abijah Rowe House is on the west side of the property. It faces Salmon Brook Street. This house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a roof that slopes down on two sides. It also has a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.
What Makes the Rowe House Special?
The front of the house has five window sections. The main door is in the center. It has fancy wooden decorations around it. Inside, the house still has many of its original features. It has been decorated to look like it did in the early 1800s.
History of the Rowe House
The Rowe House was built around 1732. It was probably built by Nehemiah Lee. This makes it the oldest building still standing from when the first settlers came to this area. It shows us what homes were like long ago.
The Weed House: A Rescued Home
The Moses Weed House is located behind the Rowe House. It is connected by a short hallway. This house faces north toward Meadow Gate Road. It is a single-story wooden building. It also has a roof that slopes down on two sides and a central chimney.
Inside the Weed House
The front of the Weed House has three window sections. The main door is in the middle with simple trim around it. Inside, you can find a living room decorated in the Victorian style. This house also holds the historical society's library and gift shop.
Moving the Weed House to Safety
The Weed House was built around 1790. It was originally in another part of Granby. In 1970, it was moved to this property. This was done to save it from being torn down. It's a great example of how historical societies protect old buildings.
The Cooley School: A Classroom from the Past
The Cooley School is a single-story wooden building. It has a pointed roof. This schoolhouse was built around 1870. It is the only old school building in Granby that has not been changed.
School Days in Granby
The Cooley School was used as a school until 1972. The historical society moved it to their property in 1980. Inside, it looks like a classroom from the late 1800s. It helps visitors imagine what school was like back then.
The Tobacco Barn: Granby's Farming History
Also on the property is a tobacco barn. This barn was built in 1914. It now holds many exhibits. These exhibits show the history of Granby. They also teach about the area's farming past.
