Exploring the Historic Rowe House
The Abijah Rowe House stands on the west side of the property. It faces Salmon Brook Street. This house is a two-and-a-half-story wooden building. It has a sloped roof and a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden boards.
The front of the house has five windows and a door in the center. The door has simple decorations around it. Inside, many of the original parts are still there. The house has been decorated to look like it did in the early 1800s. It was built around 1732, probably by Nehemiah Lee. This makes it the oldest building still standing from the first settlers in the area.
Discovering the Moses Weed House
The Moses Weed House is located behind the Rowe House. A short hallway connects the two buildings. This house faces north toward Meadow Gate Road. It is a single-story wooden building. It also has a sloped roof and a chimney in the middle.
The front of the Weed House has three windows and a door in the center. The door has simple trim around it. Inside, you can find a living room decorated in the Victorian style. This house also holds the historical society's library and gift shop. The Moses Weed House was built around 1790 in another part of Granby. It was moved to this spot in 1970 to save it from being torn down.
Learning at the Cooley School
The Cooley School is another interesting building on the property. It is a single-story wooden building with a pointed roof. This schoolhouse was built around 1870. It is special because it is the only old school building in Granby that has not been changed.
The Cooley School was used as a school until 1972. The historical society moved it to their property in 1980. Inside, the school has been set up to look like a classroom from the late 1800s. It helps visitors imagine what school was like long ago.
Visiting the Tobacco Barn
There is also a large tobacco barn on the property. This barn was built in 1914. Today, it is not used for tobacco anymore. Instead, it holds many exhibits about Granby's history. You can learn about the town's farming past and other interesting facts here.
