Salt Fork is a small place in the southeastern part of Grant County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county. You can find Salt Fork along Oklahoma State Highway 74. It's about six miles south of a town called Lamont and just one mile south of the Salt Fork Arkansas River.

Salt Fork's History

Salt Fork has an interesting history, even though it's a small community.

How Salt Fork Got Its Name

The community wasn't always called Salt Fork. When it first started, it was known as Elmpark. However, people decided to change the name to Salt Fork. This new name came from the nearby Salt Fork Arkansas River. Rivers often play a big role in naming places, and this was true for Salt Fork too.

The Post Office in Salt Fork

A very important part of any community's history is its post office. The post office in Salt Fork was officially opened on July 12, 1895. For many years, it helped people send and receive letters and packages. This was especially important before the internet and cell phones, as it was a main way for people to communicate. The Salt Fork post office served the community for a long time, until it closed on April 30, 1951.
