Salts Mill facts for kids
Salts Mill is a famous old factory building in Saltaire, West Yorkshire, England. It used to make cloth, but now it's a cool place with an art gallery, shops, and restaurants. Sir Titus Salt built it, and it opened in 1853. Back then, it was the biggest factory building in the whole world! Today, the art gallery inside is called the 1853 Gallery, named after the year it opened. You can see many paintings by a local artist named David Hockney there.
Sir Titus Salt was a rich factory owner who also cared about people. He built Salts Mill and the village of Saltaire around it. He wanted to make working conditions much better for his employees. In those days, many factory workers had very hard lives. They often got sick, earned little money, and worked long hours, sometimes more than 16 hours a day. The machines were also dangerous, leading to many accidents. Sir Titus Salt wanted to change this by creating a better place for his workers to live and work. Salts Mill is a very important old building, protected by law as a Grade II* listed building. The mill stopped making cloth in 1986. The next year, a man named Jonathan Silver bought it and started to make it into the amazing place it is today.
The Peace Museum Moves In
The Peace Museum moved to Salts Mill in August 2024. It is now on the third floor of the building. This move was made possible with money from the Bradford 2025 City of Culture fund and the national lottery. The Peace Museum teaches visitors about peace and how people work to make the world a better place.
