The Peace Museum: Exploring Peace and Peacemakers
The Peace Museum wants to teach, inform, and inspire everyone. It does this through its collection of items and its exhibitions. The museum offers learning activities for schools, colleges, and universities. It focuses on people, events, and stories from local areas, the UK, and around the world.
What You'll Discover at the Museum
The museum asks visitors to think about peace. It shows that working for peace is an active effort. It's not just sitting back and waiting. Peace requires challenge and hard work. The museum encourages you to ask, "What could you do?" and "What story will you tell?"
How the Peace Museum Started
The idea for a peace museum first came up in the mid-1980s. A person named Gerald Drewett from the Give Peace a Chance Trust had this idea. In 1990, Shireen Shah, a student at Bradford University, wrote about creating a "Museum for Peace." She was studying in the Peace Studies Department.
Two years later, in 1992, an international group of peace museums met at Bradford University. They suggested that a Peace Museum should be set up in Bradford. A committee was then formed to find money and support for the idea.
The museum officially opened in 1994. It received a five-year grant from the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Foundation. At first, it was called 'The National Peace Museum Project'. It operated from a temporary spot in the Wool Exchange. In 1998, the museum moved to its current home. You can find it on the top floor of 10 Piece Hall Yard, in the center of Bradford city.
Exploring Exhibitions at the Museum
The Peace Museum always has new and interesting exhibitions. It hosts several displays throughout the year. These temporary exhibitions cover many different topics related to peace.
For example, one past exhibition was called 'Challenging the Fabric of Society'. It showed protest banners from the museum's textile collection. Another exhibition, 'Remembering the Kindertransport', honored Holocaust Memorial Day. There was also 'A force for peace? The History of European Cooperation'. This display explored the history of peace behind the European Union.
