The Saltwater Lagoon is a cool natural spot located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It's a type of lagoon, which is a shallow body of water that is partly separated from the ocean.

Saltwater Lagoon: A Unique Coastal Waterway

The Saltwater Lagoon is special because it gets its water directly from the sea. It has a narrow opening that lets saltwater flow in from the Tasman Sea. This makes it different from many other lagoons that are fed by rivers.

Where is Saltwater Lagoon Located?

This lagoon is found in the southern part of the Westland District. To its west, you'll find Abut Head, a notable coastal feature. East and southeast of the lagoon is the small village of Harihari.

How Does Saltwater Lagoon Get Its Water?

Unlike most lagoons, the Saltwater Lagoon doesn't have any rivers flowing into it. Instead, it connects directly to the Tasman Sea through a small opening on its western side. This allows ocean water to enter the lagoon, giving it its "saltwater" name. Even though no rivers feed into it, the Hinatua River flows very close to the lagoon's eastern edge. This unique setup creates a special environment for plants and animals that can live in salty water.
