Salute Your Shorts is a funny American TV show that was on Nickelodeon. It aired from 1991 to 1992, and reruns played until 1999. The show was based on a book called Salute Your Shorts: Life at Summer Camp. This book was written by Steve Slavkin and Thomas Hill in 1986.

The TV show takes place at a made-up summer camp called Camp Anawanna. It's all about the teenage campers and their strict but funny counselor. They get into all sorts of adventures and play lots of jokes on each other. The show was mostly filmed in Los Angeles, at Franklin Canyon Park and Griffith Park Boys Camp.

The show's name comes from a common prank that campers play. A group of kids might steal someone's boxer shorts. Then, they raise the shorts up a flagpole, like a flag. Other kids then salute the shorts as part of the joke!

In the second season, a new character named Ronald "Ronnie" Foster Pinsky joined the cast. He was played by Blake Soper. Ronnie was a smooth, well-dressed boy who liked to impress the girls. He often clashed with Budnick, a more rough-and-tumble camper played by Danny Cooksey. Their fights for the girls' attention caused many funny moments at Camp Anawanna.

Meet the Campers and Counselors

Here are the main actors and the characters they played in the show:

  • Kirk Baily as Kevin "Ug" Lee, who was the head camp counselor.
  • Megan Berwick as Z.Z. Ziff.
  • Michael Bower as Eddie C. "Donkeylips" Gelfand.
  • Venus DeMilo as Telly Radford.
  • Tim Eyster as Sponge Harris.
  • Heidi Lucas as Dina Alexander.
  • Erik MacArthur as Michael Stein (he was in season 1).
  • Blake Soper as Ronald "Ronnie" Foster Pinsky (he joined in season 2).
  • Danny Cooksey as Robert "Bobby" Budnick.
  • Steve Slavkin as Dr. Kahn, who was the camp director but was never seen on screen.

Why the Show Ended

Salute Your Shorts did not get a third season. This was because of money problems. Also, most of the actors did not want to move from Los Angeles to Orlando. Nickelodeon Studios was located in Orlando.

In March 2010, some episodes from season two became available to buy online. You could find them on iTunes, Amazon.com, and Zune marketplace. Later, in August 2010, some episodes from season one were also added.

The show has often been shown on The Splat. This is a special block of programs on TeenNick that features shows from the 1990s. Even though the show had a short run, it was very popular. It has won many fan votes to be shown again during special holiday blocks.

In March 2021, ten episodes of the show were added to Paramount+. This made it easier for new fans to discover the series.

Cast Reunions

Many of the original actors and people who worked on the show got together in September 2012. They had a special panel at the Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles.

Another reunion happened in 2015 at Portland’s Everything Is Festival. Most of the cast attended this event. However, Danny Cooksey could not make it. He was busy recording music with his country and western band, Shelter Dogs.
