The Salzach is an important river in Europe. It flows through two countries: Austria and Germany. This river is a tributary of the Inn River, which means it flows into the Inn. Eventually, the water from the Salzach joins the mighty Danube River.
The Salzach river is about 227 km (141 mi) long. Its water collects from a large area called a drainage basin. This basin covers about 6,829 km2 (2,637 sq mi). It includes big parts of the Northern Limestone Alps and the Central Eastern Alps.
Most of the Salzach's drainage basin, about 83%, is in Austria. The rest of the basin is in Germany, specifically in a region called Bavaria.
Rivers Joining the Salzach
The Salzach has several other rivers that flow into it. These are its largest tributaries. They include the Lammer, the Berchtesgadener Ache, the Saalach, the Sur, and the Götzinger Achen.
Why "Salzburg River" is Not Correct
Sometimes, people visiting the area mistakenly call the Salzach the "Salzburg River." This is likely because the city of Salzburg is located on the river. However, the river's official name is Salzach.
