The Sam Bailey Building is a very old school building in Griffin, Georgia. It was built in 1870 and is the oldest public school building in the city. This building was first a private school. Then, in 1873, it became a public school. It went back to being private in 1877, but by 1885, it was public again.
The building was made for the Griffin Male Institute. It was named after Sam Wesley Bailey. He was a banker and landowner who moved to Griffin after the American Civil War. Mr. Bailey helped pay for the school to be built. The Sam Bailey Building is a two-story brick building with a special design style called Italianate. It is now part of Griffin High School and connects to other school buildings with covered walkways.
