Samuel Arthur Campbell (born August 1, 1895 – died April 13, 1962) was an American writer. He focused on writing about nature. People sometimes called him the "Philosopher of the Forest." He wrote books for both children and adults. He also traveled a lot, giving talks about nature.

Sam Campbell's Life Story

Sam Campbell was born on August 1, 1895. His hometown was Watseka, Illinois. He was the younger of two children. His parents were Arthur J. and Katherine Campbell.

On June 10, 1941, he married Virginia Adams. She was often called "Giny." Sam Campbell had a good friend named Sigurd F. Olson. Olson was also an environmentalist. Campbell even wrote an article for Olson's magazine, North Country, in 1951.

Sam Campbell passed away on April 13, 1962. He died in Barrington, Illinois. There is a special trail named after him. This trail is near his home in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. It is located in the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest.

What Sam Campbell Did

Sam Campbell was a very busy person. He was a writer, a lecturer, and a photographer. He also made films about nature.

From 1934 to 1958, he gave many talks. He worked for the Chicago and North Western Railway. The railway wanted to encourage people to visit places. They wanted them to see the beautiful areas in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

He loved to study wild animals. He did this from his home in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. He called his home the "sanctuary of Wegimind." This name reportedly came from an Ojibwe word for "mother." He had visited the Three Lakes area since he was a boy. He also studied animals during his many travels.
