Samacá is a small town and a municipality located in the Central Boyacá Province of Colombia. It is part of the Boyacá Department. Samacá shares its borders with several other towns. To the east, it is next to Cucaita, Tunja, and Ventaquemada. To the west, you'll find Ráquira. In the north, it borders Sáchica, Sora, and Cucaita. Finally, to the south, it is bordered by Ventaquemada, Ráquira, and Guachetá in the Cundinamarca Department.

What Does the Name Samacá Mean?

The name Samacá comes from the ancient Chibcha language spoken by the native people of this area. Before the Spanish conquest of the Muisca, Samacá was a small village. In the Chibcha language, Sa means a noble title, Ma is a person's name, and means a special enclosed place for a leader.

A Look Back: The History of Samacá

Samacá started as a settlement near a large lake. This lake was known by the native name "Lake of Cansicá" or "Valley of the Lake." Around this lake, there were three native villages called Patagüy, Foacá, and Sáchica. The area of Samacá was once ruled by the zaque, a powerful leader from the nearby city of Hunza. The modern town of Samacá was officially founded on January 1, 1556, by a person named Juan de los Barrios.

How Samacá Makes a Living: The Economy

The main ways people in Samacá earn money are through farming, raising cattle, and mining. Farmers in Samacá grow important crops like potatoes, peas, corn, and beet.

However, the biggest industry in Samacá is coal mining. Most of the coal dug up here is sent to other places. Samacá's economy has grown a lot in the last ten years. The town is also open to new businesses and investments from around the world.
