The Sambirano woolly lemur (also called the Sambirano avahi) is a type of woolly lemur. It lives only in western Madagascar. Its scientific name is Avahi unicolor.

What Does It Look Like?

This lemur lives in Cacamba, a place on the Ampasindava peninsula in northwestern Madagascar. It looks different from another lemur, Avahi occidentalis. The Sambirano woolly lemur does not have a white outline around its face. It also doesn't have black, hairless circles around its eyes.

Its face is a bit lighter than the top of its head. This creates a slight outline because the fur on its face is short and straight. The rest of its body has curly fur. There's a small patch of fur above its nose and on its forehead. This looks like a dark line.

The lemur's eyes are maroon, and its eyelids are black and hairless. Its snout is also black and hairless. But the corners of its mouth have a white tint. The fur on its head and body is a light gray-beige color. It looks a bit curly and speckled.

Its tail can be gray-brown or reddish-brown. The base of the tail is a pale brown or cream color. The fur on its back is a little darker around the shoulders. Its lower legs are an off-white color. The fur on its chest, belly, and inner legs is thin and light gray.

Where Does It Live?

Scientists don't know much about the Sambirano woolly lemur. Only a few of these animals have ever been found. They probably live in the Sambirano region of northwestern Madagascar.

They might live between the Sambirano River in the north. In the south, their home might reach the Andranomalaza or Maevarano River.

Protecting This Lemur

The Sambirano woolly lemur is an endangered animal. We don't know how much people hunt this lemur. But cutting down forests (deforestation) is likely the biggest danger it faces.

This lemur is listed on Appendix I of CITES. This means it is very protected from international trade. Since only a few of these lemurs are known to live in protected areas, more research is needed. It's also important to make more protected areas for them.
