Samia al-Amoudi (Arabic: ساميه العمودي) is a doctor from Saudi Arabia. She is an obstetrician and gynecologist, which means she specializes in women's health and childbirth. Dr. al-Amoudi is also a professor and works to help people learn about breast cancer.
She leads the Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in breast cancer. She is famous for her efforts to raise awareness about this disease. This work became very important to her after she found out she had breast cancer herself. She was also the first woman from the Gulf Cooperation Council to join the board of the Union for International Cancer Control.
Life and important work
Dr. Samia al-Amoudi was one of the first doctors to finish medical school at King Abdulaziz University. This happened in 1981.
In April 2006, she found out she had breast cancer. She then had chemotherapy, a treatment for cancer. Dr. al-Amoudi was the first woman in Saudi Arabia to write openly about her experience with the disease. She shared her story in a newspaper column and on a daily TV show.
In March 2007, she received a special honor called the International Women of Courage Award. Condoleezza Rice from the United States Department of State gave her this award.
In 2010, she was listed as one of the most influential Arabs in the world. She was ranked fifth on the Power 100 list by Arabian Business magazine. Later, in 2015 and 2016, she was also recognized as one of the most powerful Arab women in healthcare and science.
Since 2012, after she finished her cancer treatment, Dr. al-Amoudi has been the head of the Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in breast cancer. She also holds a scientific chair for breast cancer at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She is also an ambassador for GE Healthcare's #GetFit campaign.
Dr. al-Amoudi is the CEO of the Sheikh Mohammed Hussien Al-Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer. She is also a scientific chair for breast cancer and a professor. She works as a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at King Abdulaziz University.
