Samuel Howard "Big Boy" Archer Sr. (born December 23, 1870 – died January 15, 1941) was an important American football player, coach, and educator. He made a big difference at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He coached the football team there for two different periods. He also taught math and later became the college's president.

Playing Days at Colgate University

Archer went to Colgate University. While he was there, he played football for the Colgate Raiders. He and George L. Hayes made history in 1899. They were the first two African Americans to play for the Colgate football team. This was a very important step at that time.

A Leader at Morehouse College

After his time at Colgate, Samuel Archer started teaching mathematics at Morehouse College. He worked at Morehouse for 33 years, serving in many different roles. He was a dedicated teacher and a valuable member of the college staff.

Becoming College President

In 1931, Samuel Archer took on an even bigger role. He became the fifth president of Morehouse College. He led the college until 1937. Being a college president means you are in charge of everything. It is a very important job. He helped guide the college during his time as president.

His Coaching Success

Before becoming president, Archer was also a very successful football coach. He coached the Morehouse Maroon Tigers football team. He coached them from 1905 to 1908. He returned to coach again from 1912 to 1915. His teams had an amazing record. They won 35 games, lost only 2, and tied 5 times. This shows he was a great leader on the field too.

Later Life

Samuel Howard Archer Sr. passed away in 1941. He is buried in South-View Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. His legacy as a player, coach, and educator lives on. He opened doors for others and helped many students.
