Samuel Hall Lord (1778 – 1844), known as Sam Lord, was a famous figure from the island of Barbados. He became very rich and built a large castle-like home in Barbados. Legend says Sam Lord gained his wealth by tricking ships. He would hang bright lanterns high in the coconut trees near his home. Sailors far out at sea would think these lights were the safe port city of Bridgetown. They would then sail their ships towards the lights, only to crash into the hidden coral reefs near his property. After the ships wrecked, Sam Lord would take the treasures and riches for his castle, which was located in the parish of Saint Philip.

Over time, Sam Lord's impressive castle became a hotel known as the Sam Lord's Castle. However, the hotel faced big money problems. It was eventually sold, and parts of it were planned to be torn down. This was to make room for a bigger hotel project by the new owners.

In 2007, a company bought Sam Lord's Castle. But due to more money troubles, the new building plans did not happen. The government of Barbados even thought about buying the property. Then, on October 20, 2010, a large fire badly damaged Sam Lord's Castle.

Later, the castle and the land around it were bought by the Wyndham Hotel Group. Construction on a new resort began in 2017. Plans for the new resort show that the old castle walls will be kept safe as a preserved ruin, showing its long history.
