Early Life and Family
Samuel Hope Morley was born on July 3, 1845. His father was Samuel Morley, who was a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Rebekah Maria Hope.
Samuel's younger brother was Arnold Morley, who also became a politician. Samuel's family had a history in business. His paternal grandparents were involved in making hosiery, which is a type of knitted clothing.
Education and Studies
Samuel studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He earned a master's degree from the university in 1872.
Business and Public Service
Samuel Hope Morley was a partner in a company called I. and R. Morley. This company was located on Wood Street.
Governor of the Bank of England
He served as the Governor of the Bank of England from 1893 to 1895. The Governor is the head of the central bank of the United Kingdom. This role is very important for the country's economy.
Becoming a Baron
On February 9, 1912, Samuel Hope Morley was given a special title. He became Baron Hollenden, of Leigh in the County of Kent. This made him a member of the peerage, which is a system of hereditary titles in the United Kingdom.
Other Public Roles
Besides his business and banking roles, Samuel also held other important positions. He was a Justice of the Peace (JP) for Kent. Personal Life and Family
Samuel Hope Morley married Laura Marianne Birch on March 6, 1884. Laura was the daughter of Reverend G. Royds Birch. They had two sons together.
His Sons
- Geoffrey Hope-Morley, 2nd Baron Hollenden (1885–1977): He was their first son. Geoffrey later inherited his father's title.
- Hon. Claude Hope-Morley (1887–1968): Their second son. Claude married Lady Dorothy Mercer-Henderson in 1911.
Later Years
Samuel Hope Morley passed away in February 1929, when he was 83 years old. His son, Geoffrey, became the 2nd Baron Hollenden after his father's death. Laura, Lady Hollenden, died in 1945. Since Geoffrey did not have any sons, the later Barons Hollenden were all descendants of Samuel's second son, Claude.
