Geoffrey Hope-Morley, the 2nd Baron Hollenden, was an important British aristocrat. He was born on January 28, 1885, and passed away on October 19, 1977. He held a special role called the High Sheriff of the County of London.
Early Life and Family
Geoffrey Hope-Morley was the son of Samuel Hope Morley and Laura Marianne Birch. His father was a successful banker. He even served as the Governor of the Bank of England. In 1912, his father was given the special title of Baron Hollenden.
Geoffrey's grandfather was Samuel Morley, who was a member of Parliament. His uncle, Arnold Morley, was also a politician. Geoffrey had a younger brother named Claude Hope-Morley.
Geoffrey went to Eton College in Windsor for his schooling. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge in Cambridgeshire.
Career and Public Service
In 1917, Geoffrey Hope-Morley took on an important public role. He became the High Sheriff of the County of London. A High Sheriff is a ceremonial officer who represents the King or Queen in a county. It is a very old and respected position. Interestingly, his own father had held the same position from 1893 to 1894.
After his father passed away in 1929, Geoffrey inherited the title of Baron. This meant he became the 2nd Baron Hollenden. A "baron" is a noble title in the British system.
Besides his role as High Sheriff, Geoffrey also served as a Justice of the Peace in 1927. A Justice of the Peace is a volunteer who helps with local legal matters. In 1929, he was also the president of the Wholesale Textile Association, which was a group for businesses that sold fabrics and clothing.
Personal Life
Lord Hollenden was married three times during his life. His first marriage was in 1914 to Mary Sidney Katharine Almina Gardner. They had two daughters together:
- Mary Joan Fenella Hope-Morley, born in 1915.
- Elspeth Rachel Marianne Winifred Hope Hope-Morley, born in 1917.
His second marriage was in 1929 to Muriel Ivy Gladstone. She was related to William Ewart Gladstone, who was a former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Muriel passed away in 1962.
His third marriage was in 1963 to Violet Norris Howitt.
Lord Hollenden lived to be 92 years old and passed away on October 19, 1977. Since he did not have any sons, his nephew, Gordon Hope-Morley, inherited the title and became the 3rd Baron Hollenden.
