What is a High Sheriff?
A High Sheriff is a very old and important role in England. It dates back over a thousand years! The word "sheriff" comes from "shire reeve." A shire reeve was like a chief officer for a "shire" (an old word for a county).
The High Sheriff's main jobs included:
- Making sure the King's or Queen's laws were followed.
- Helping to run the courts.
- Collecting taxes for the Crown.
- Organizing elections for Parliament.
Today, the role is mostly ceremonial. But it still holds a lot of history and tradition.
The County of London (1889-1965)
The County of London was a special area in England. It was created in 1889. This county covered a large part of what we now call Inner London. It was managed by the London County Council. This council was in charge of many local services. These included schools, fire services, and parks.
Before 1889, London was a mix of different areas. Creating the County of London helped to organize the city better. It made it easier to manage the growing population. The county lasted until 1965. After that, it was replaced by Greater London. This new area is much larger.
