Henry Parkman Sturgis (born March 1, 1847 – died March 1, 1929) was an important person in both banking and politics. He was born in the United States but became a well-known banker in England. He was also a Liberal politician.
Early Life and Family
Henry Parkman Sturgis was born in the United States on March 1, 1847. His father was Russell Sturgis. His mother was Julia Overing Boit.
Henry had several brothers who became famous. His brothers Julian Sturgis and Howard Sturgis were both authors. His older half-brother, John Hubbard Sturgis, was a talented architect. Henry was named after his uncle, Henry Parkman Sturgis. His family was involved in a successful business called Russell & Sturgis. This company made a lot of money through trade in Manila.
Education and Career
Henry Parkman Sturgis went to two very famous schools in England. He studied at Eton and then at Christ Church, Oxford University.
After his education, he became a partner in a big banking company called Baring Bros. & Co. His father was also a senior partner in this company. Henry also served as a director for the London and Westminster Bank. This shows he was a very important person in the banking world.
Political Life
In 1885, Henry Sturgis decided to enter politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for an area called South Dorset. An MP is someone who represents a part of the country in the government. However, he lost his seat in the next election in 1886.
Later, in 1896, he was given another important role. He became the High Sheriff of the County of London. A High Sheriff is a ceremonial officer in a county, representing the King or Queen.
Personal Life
Henry Parkman Sturgis was married twice. His first marriage was to Mary Cecilia Brand on October 2, 1872. Mary was the daughter of a nobleman, Henry Brand, 1st Viscount Hampden.
Henry and Mary had six children together. Some of their children included:

- Rachel Sturgis (born 1876)
- Olive Sturgis (born 1878)
- Henry Russell Sturgis (1879–1967), who later became a Lieutenant-Colonel.
- Mary Sturgis (1886–1982)
Sadly, Mary Cecilia Brand passed away on June 20, 1886.
Ten years later, on July 17, 1896, Henry married Marie "Mariette" Eveleen Meredith. Marie was the daughter of a famous novelist named George Meredith.
Henry Parkman Sturgis passed away on March 1, 1929, on his 82nd birthday.
