Sir Albert Charles Gladstone, the 5th Baronet, was a British businessman and a talented rower. He was born on 28 October 1886 and passed away on 2 March 1967. He is best known for winning a gold medal in rowing at the 1908 Summer Olympics. He also had a very successful career in business.

Early Life and Education
Albert Gladstone was born at Hawarden Castle in Flintshire, Wales. His family was quite famous. He was the eldest son of Reverend Stephen Edward Gladstone. His grandfather was William Ewart Gladstone, who was a former Prime Minister.
When Albert was 12 years old, he attended his famous grandfather's funeral. He went to Eton College, a well-known school. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a college at Oxford University. He finished his studies in 1909.
A Champion Rower
While at Oxford University, Albert Gladstone became an excellent rower. He was part of the university's main rowing team. He competed in the famous Boat Race four times between 1906 and 1909. This is a big race between Oxford and Cambridge universities.
In 1908, his team from Christ Church won the Grand Challenge Cup. This is a very important rowing competition at the Henley Royal Regatta. Just four weeks later, he achieved his biggest sporting success. He was part of the Leander eight-man rowing team. This team won the gold medal for Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London.
Service in World War I
Albert Gladstone served his country during World War I. He fought in places like Mesopotamia and Gallipoli. He was recognized for his bravery during the war. This recognition is called being "mentioned in dispatches."
He became a captain in the 2nd/5th Royal Gurkha Rifles. This was part of the Indian Army Reserve. In 1919, he was given an award called the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Business and Public Service
After the war, Albert Gladstone became a very successful businessman. He held many important jobs. From 1924 to 1947, he was a Director of the Bank of England. This is a very important position in the financial world. He was also a senior partner at Ogilvy, Gillanders & Company. This company was involved in trade with East India.
He was appointed a Lieutenant of the City of London. In 1929, he became the High Sheriff of the County of London. This was an important role in local government. In 1935, he was made the Constable of Flint Castle. He held this special position until he passed away.
In 1945, he became the 5th Baronet. This title passed to him after his cousin, Sir John Evelyn Gladstone, died.
Later Life
Sir Albert Gladstone lived to be 80 years old. He passed away in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. He never married and did not have any children. Because of this, his title of Baronet went to his younger brother, Charles Andrew Gladstone.
