The Samuel N. Brown House is a cool old building in Dayton, Ohio. It was built a long time ago, in the 1870s, for an important businessman. Today, it's known as a historic site and has been used for different businesses since the 1920s.

Who Lived in the Samuel N. Brown House?

The first person to live in this house was Samuel N. Brown. He was a very successful businessman in Dayton.

Samuel Brown's Business

Samuel Brown owned a company called S.N. Brown and Company. He started it way back in 1847. His company made parts for horse-drawn carriages. They created things like wheel hubs, spokes, and even whole wheels for these carriages.

The House's Journey Through Time

Samuel Brown had the house built in 1875. Later, in 1920, a local hospital bought it. They used it for a few years until 1923. For a long time, the house was home to an antique shop. In the 2000s, it was even a clothing store called Madisson House for a while!

What Does the Samuel N. Brown House Look Like?

The Brown House has a unique and interesting design. It sits on a strong stone foundation. The roof is made of asphalt, and some parts of the walls are covered with weatherboard.

Special Design Features

The house is shaped like the letter "T". It has a tall tower on the left side of the front. A big, fancy mansard roof covers the top. There's also a veranda that goes all the way around the front of the house.

Under the roof, you can see decorative eaves. These have a cornice with special brackets and a frieze. The house has two stories. Many arched dormer windows poke out from the roof. The first floor has tall rectangular windows, some smaller square windows, and even some arches. A cool detail is the railing around the very top of the tower. All these parts together make the house look like a classic Second Empire style building.

Why Is the Samuel N. Brown House Important?

The Samuel N. Brown House is considered very special. In 1977, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

A Historic Landmark

It earned this important title for two main reasons. First, its amazing architecture is historically significant. Second, it's important because of its connection to Samuel Brown, the person who built it. Right across the street, you can find another building listed on the National Register, the Westbrock Funeral Home.
